Flutterwave names Morounke Olufemi global CFO as Mitesh Popat steps down

Nigerian payments company Flutterwave has appointed Morounke Olufemi as its Global Chief Financial Officer. She replaces Mitesh Popat, who is stepping down after two years in the role, The Condia reported on 22 September.

Who is Morounke Olufemi?

  • Joined Flutterwave in 2025 as CFO for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, working closely with Popat.
  • Previously Group CFO of Access Holdings, overseeing banking, payments, consumer lending, asset management and insurance businesses.
  • About 24 years in financial services, starting at Lehman Brothers in Europe, with later roles at AXA XL and Old Mutual.
  • MBA in Finance from Durham University Business School and Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.

Popat’s exit

Popat joined Flutterwave in 2024 from Citi, where he was CFO for the Middle East and Africa. Chief executive Olugbenga Agboola said on LinkedIn that Popat had built a “disciplined financial foundation” and set the company up for long-term profitability. Popat is leaving to co-found Next Communications, which turns telecom infrastructure into digital services for brands, and will stay on at Flutterwave as a strategic adviser.

Why it matters

Flutterwave is Africa’s best-known fintech, and the CFO role is central to its long-discussed plans to become profitable and eventually go public. Promoting an experienced Nigerian finance executive from within gives continuity during that journey. The change follows other boardroom moves at the company this year.
